AFTER IKKYU: 57 by JAMES HARRISON

Poet Analysis

First Line: TOOK MY OWN LIFE BECAUSE I WAS PERMANENTLY CRIPPLED
Last Line: HOW PLEASANT TO GET OFF A HORSE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LAKE.

Took my own life because I was permanently crippled,
put on backward, the repairs eating up money and time.
For fifty-seven years I've had it all wrong
until I studied the other side of the mirror.
No birth before death. The other way around.
How pleasant to get off a horse in the middle of the lake.
