THE ROCK WITH RUNES by HEINRICH HEINE

First Line: THERE LOOMS IN THE SEA THE ROCK WITH RUNES
Last Line: THE WAVES--THEY FOAM AND WANDER.

There looms in the sea the rock with runes--
I sit with my memory roaming.
The wind and the seagulls shriek their tunes,
The waves are wandering and foaming.

I loved--ah, many a dearest child,
And many a comrade yonder!
Where are they gone? The wind is wild,
The waves--they foam and wander.
