HIGH WIND by ELINOR WYLIE

Poem Explanation Poet Analysis

First Line: BOEOTIUS LAUGHED UPON THE WINDY CORNER'S
Last Line: WHILE SLAVE-SHIPS FOUNDERED UNDER SAMOTHRACE.
Subject(s): ENGLAND; ENGLISH;

Boeotius laughed upon the windy corner's
Decline; my female ancestors were shocked
Investing eyes like Mid-Victorian mourners'
In veils of fear; but one among them mocked.

She only, careless and aristocratic,
Laughed at Boeotius, laughing in his face,
And stared, in disarray divinely static,
While slave-ships foundered under Samothrace.
