DOWN THE MISSISSIPPI AT NIGHT by CINCINNATUS HEINE MILLER

Poet Analysis

First Line: SOWING THE WAVES WITH A FIERY RAIN
Last Line: JEHOVAH'S DREAD, UNUTTERABLE NAME.
Subject(s): MISSISSIPPI RIVER; RIVERS;

Sowing the waves with a fiery rain,
Leaving behind us a lane of light,
Weaving a web in the woof of night,
Cleaving a continent's wealth in twain.
Lighting the world with a way of flame,
Writing, even as the lightnings write
High over the awful arched forehead of night,
Jehovah's dread, unutterable name.
