A VALENTINE GAME (FOR TWO PLEAYERS) by CHRISTOPHER DARLINGTON MORLEY

Poet Analysis

First Line: THEY HAVE A GAME, THUS PLAYED
Last Line: IN KISSING, AND IN BEING KISSED.
Subject(s): HOLIDAYS; VALENTINE'S DAY;

THEY have a game, thus played:
He says unto his maid
@3What are those shining things
So brown, so golden brown?@1
And she, in doubt, replies
@3How now, what shining things
So brown?@1

But then, she coming near,
To see more clear,
He looks again, and cries
(All startled with surprise)
@3Sweet wretch, they are your eyes,
So brown, so brown!@1

The climax and the end consist
In kissing, and in being kissed.
