ON THE BENEFACTIONS IN THE LATE FROST by ALEXANDER POPE

Poet Analysis

First Line: YES, 'TIS THE TIME! I CRY'D, IMPOSE THE CHAIN!
Last Line: TO TAKE THE ONLY WAY TO BE FORGIVEN.
Subject(s): CHARITY; FORGIVENESS; HOPE; SIN; PHILANTHROPY; CLEMENCY; OPTIMISM;

Yes, 'tis the time! I cry'd, impose the chain!
Destin'd and due to wretches self-enslav'd!
But when I saw such Charity remain,
I half could wish this people might be sav'd.
Faith lost, and Hope, their Charity begins;
And 'tis a wise design on pitying heav'n,
If this can cover multitudes of sins,
To take the only way to be forgiven.
