FLOWERS by ARTHUR RIMBAUD

Poem Explanation Poet Analysis

First Line: FROM A GOLDEN STADIUM
Last Line: STURDY YOUNG ROSES TO THE MARBLE TERRACES.

From a golden stadium-amid silken cords, gray chiffons, green velvets, and
discs of crystal blackening like bronze in the sun-I see the foxglove open on a
rug of silver filigree, of eyes, and flowing hair.
Yellow gold-pieces lie strewn over agate, mahogany pillars support a dome of
emeralds, bouquets of white satin, and delicate stalks of rubies gird the water
lily.
Like a snow-limbed god with enormous blue eyes, sea and sky lure the throng of
sturdy young roses to the marble terraces.
