VIGIL OF ANNUNCIATION by CHRISTINA GEORGINA ROSSETTI

Poet Analysis

First Line: ALL WEARETH, ALL WASTETH
Last Line: BUT THEIR TO-MORROW'S REST WHAT TONGUE SHALL SAY?
Subject(s): ANNUNCIATION, THE;

ALL weareth, all wasteth,
All flitteth, all hasteth,
All of flesh and time: --
Sound, sweet heavenly chime,
Ring in the unutterable eternal prime.

Man hopeth, man feareth,
Man droopeth: -- Christ cheereth,
Compassing release,
Comforting with peace,
Promising rest where strife and anguish cease.

Saints waking, saints sleeping,
Rest well in safe keeping;
Well they rest to-day
While they watch and pray, --
But their to-morrow's rest what tongue shall say?
