POE'S CRITICS by JOHN BANISTER TABB

First Line: A CERTAIN TYRANT TO DISGRACE
Last Line: HOW LOFTY GROWS THE MONUMENT.
Subject(s): CRITICISM & CRITICS; POE, EDGAR ALLAN (1809-1849);

A certain tyrant to disgrace
The more a rebel's resting-place,
Compelled the people every one
To hurl in passing there a stone;
Which done, the rugged pile became
A sepulchre to keep his name.

And thus it is with Edgar Poe;
Each passing critic has his throw,
Nor sees, defeating his intent,
How lofty grows the monument.
