SONG (17) by JOHN WILMOT

Poet Analysis

First Line: YOUR GLORY PHILLIS IS IN BEING LOVED
Last Line: WHILE THERE REMAINS ONE SENSIBLE OR BRAVE

YOUR glory Phillis is in being lov'd
but all your charmes consist in loving
A cruel beauty never conquering prov'd
kind kindl'd flames are the most moving
tis A mean harte that to your frown can yeald
soften my chaine and keep me still your slave
tyrants may force but neer can win the feild
while there remains one sensible or brave
