HERMAN MELVILLE by CONRAD AIKEN

Poem Explanation Poet Analysis

First Line: MY TOWERS AT LAST!'
Subject(s): MELVILLE, HERMAN (1819-1891);

Years before he had attained a mortal fame
And now, he rested in his grave at last
His eyes were like great whales that sink in sleep
And vast like whales had been his will and power
And in his wake he left a mighty wake
The little boat of his mind went drifting out
Across an ocean he had never seen.
