LINES (WRITTEN BY ELLEN LOUISA TUCKER BEFORE HER MARRIAGE) by RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Poet Analysis

First Line: LOVE SCATTERS OIL

Love scatters oil
āàOn Life's dark sea,
Sweetens its toil-
āàOur helmsman he.

Around him hover
āàOdorous clouds;
Under this cover
āàHis arrows he shrouds.

The cloud was around me,
āàI knew not why
Such sweetness crowned me,
āàWhile Time shot by.

No pain was within,
āàBut calm delight,
Like a world without sin,
āàOr a day without night.

The shafts of the god
āàWere tipped with down.,
