I long for the peace of the desert, And the sagebrush in the sun . . . The rosy sky of the morning, And the blue when the day is done . . . The rustle of hot, dry grasses, The lake bed, alkali pale . . . The crackle of brush in the herder's fire . . . The scent of a cattle trail . . . The loneliness of the desert . . . The stillness that needs no word . . . The sound of a sheep bell in the dusk, The song in the throat of a bird . . . The voice of the desert is calling, The desert beckons to me . . . The soft caress of the night wind . . . And the lull of a silent sea. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES THE LITTLE VAGABOND, FR.
