FERVENT HOUR, by LUTHER LAURENCE DOWRICK PRATT First Line: A sacrificial glow Last Line: An ecstasy of fire. Alternate Author Name(s): Pratt, Laurence | |||
A sacrificial glow Transforms the harvest's yield; Slow inward fires consume The brown grass of the field. The breathing cedars lift Warm incense in the sun; And through the leafy copses Crimson blushes run As ripe trees acquiesce To the searing-sweet embrace Of sultry autumn winds -- Priests of a pagan race. The god of autumn laughs, The flush of leaves mounts higher, Till every bush is bright -- An ecstasy of fire. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WOOD MILL by LUTHER LAURENCE DOWRICK PRATT CHAMBER MUSIC: 18 by JAMES JOYCE ILLUSIONS by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON TWO VOYAGERS by EMILY DICKINSON EXHORTATION TO PRAYER by MARGARET MERCER RONDEL by ALGERNON CHARLES SWINBURNE WATER WOMAN by JOSEPH AUSLANDER |
