GREAT LOVERS by WILLIAM HENRY DAVIES

Poet Analysis

First Line: WHY DID WE THINK NO POWER IN HEAVEN
Last Line: THERE'LL BE A POOR, UNHAPPY LADY, CRYING.
Subject(s): LOVE - LOSS OF;

Why did we think no power in Heaven
Would ever chill or blind that loving eye?
Sweet Earth, so young and green, so beautiful,
Your lover is but mortal, and must die.

Burning himself to nothing, day by day,
Your lover, that great Sun, is slowly dying;
And where you smile, a Queen of beauty now,
There'll be a poor, unhappy lady, crying.
