HE BROUGHT BEAUTY by EMMA WILSON EMERY

First Line: HE BROUGHT NO FLARE OF ROMANCE WHEN HE CAME
Last Line: FOR DUST HAS LONG SINCE LAIN UPON HIS EYES.
Subject(s): BEAUTY;

He brought no flare of romance when he came,
No transient gleam of iridescent light.
The gift he carried wore a fairer name,
Like stars above the quiet sea at night.
Not passion that would burn itself to death
Nor plea of vagrant, importuning lust --
He reached into the midnight's placid breath
And chose for me the gifts that I could trust.
He came from out the velvet glow of dawn,
Beneath blue smoke that lingered in the air;
He came when every dream of mine was gone
To offer gifts wrapped in a golden prayer.
I keep his image warm with tender sighs
For dust has long since lain upon his eyes.
